Theme Of the Poem Annabel Lee by Edgar Allan Poe

  It was many and many a year ago,
     in a kingdom by the sea,
  That a maiden there lived whom you may know,
     by the name of Annabel lee;
  And this maiden she lived with no other thought
     Then to love and be loved by me.

  I was a child and she was a child,
     in this kingdom by the sea:
  But we loved with a love that was more than love--
     i and my Annabel lee;
  With a love that the winged seraphs of heaven
      Coveted her and me.
  And this was the reason that, long ago,
      In this kingdom by the sea,
  A wind blew out of a  cloud, chilling
      My beautiful Annabel lee;
  So that her highborn kinsman came
  And bore her away from me,

 To shut her up in a sepulchre
      In this kingdom by the sea
  The angels , not half so happy in heaven,
     Went envying her and me--
 Yes!--that was the reason (as all men know,,
      in this kingdom by the sea)

  That the wind came out of the cloud by night,
      Chilling and killing my Annabel lee,
  But our love it was stronger by far than the love
      Of those who were older than we--
   Of many far wiser than we--

 And neither the angels in heaven above,
      Nor the demons down under the sea,
  Can ever dissever my soul from the soul
      Of the beautiful Annabel lee:
 For the moon never beams, with out bringing me dreams
      Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;

  And the stars never rise, but i feel the bright eyes
     Of the beautiful Annabel Lee;
  And so, all the night-tide, I lie down by the side
   Of my darling--my darling--my life and my bride,
     In her sepulchre there by the sea,
     In her tomb by the sounding sea.

                THEME OF THE POEM
Theme of the poem is the death of a beautiful woman. Death is one of his favourite subjects of Allan Poe.
In 1836 Allan Edgar Poe married 13 year old cousin Virginia Clement. She busted a blood vessel in 1842,
And remained a virtual invalid until her death from tuberculosis five years later. After the death of his wife.
Poe began to lose his struggle with drinking and drug. He addressed the famous poem Annabel Lee to his
wife. This poem records his real grief and sadness over the death of his better half. She died young and for Poe it was awfully hard to cope with grief. He has fictionalised the real story by placing the whole thing in far off past and for the setting he used the angry, tumultuous sea. He has given the topic like death a romantic
colour. The poet (the lover) and Annabel Lee (his wife ) lived in an imaginary kingdom by the sea, They
were in love since their childhood. They loved each other with such passion that even the angles in the sky.
were envious of their love. They were living happily but unfortunately one night a cold storm started to blow
and Annabel Lee got chill and later on she died. Afterwards her rich and aristocratic came and took her dead body away. They gave her burial in a watery grave. Their love was purer and stronger than the love of
all those lovers who were older or wiser then them. Though his beloved is dead but he is still in love with her.
Nothing can separate the poets soul from the soul of his beloved, neither the angles of the sky nor the demons who live underground. The poet still loves his sweetheart and angles in the sky envy them for the
pure love love they had for each other. The poet has lost his sweetheart but he keeps thinking about her.
When the cold blue moon shines in the sky, its light bring him thoughts of his dead darling. When the stars reminds him of his dead love. The poet cant get rid of her thoughts. At night he feels as if he spent the entire night with his beloved in her grave under the sea.
